"Ignorant Education Major"

In my last post I discussed the relentless and frankly very tacky cyberbully who embellished and over generalized what I said on social media. She used what I said to lead others in calling me ignorant and declaring that I had no right to educate their children. Actually, I have more right than they do. Just think:

1) Would you rather someone educate your children on how to publicly harrass, defame, criticize, and discredit another individual? Because that's the lesson that was taught by her post and her comments. Not how to stand up for what you think is right, then let it go instead of getting into an argument on social media. Not how to do the classy thing and not lash out. There was no lesson in fairness from what she did.
2) Do you really want your children to become that kind of writer? Who doesn't report the facts, who libels, who punishes others for thinking differently, who uses the words of others for their own agenda? Do you really want your children to be that self-centered? Down south, when you're self-centered, you get a big ole butt whooping. If you say something mean, you get mouth washed out with soap. Maybe she should go back to school and learn a lesson or two about being nice before she starts trying to critique others.
3) What can your students learn from unfairness, bitterness, deceit, and mockery? Do you want them to learn that they can do these things to others and get away with it? What message would that send?
I wish I could one day shield my children (and each of my precious students) from the infliction of such harm; but when it does come to them, I hope that they hold their head high and know that they are better than that. Bullies only win if you let them bring you down. Bullies only win if they bring the worst out in you but you can refuse to let them.
There are many examples in literature (which I will be teaching) of antagonists and protagonists; but the protagonist became the hero because he kept his morals. He (or she) fought the antagonist without becoming like him. Not everyone has control over what is said about them or done to them, but how we react matters more than the lies.
4) Is it really any of her business what I do with my life? Clearly from my last post, this journalist likes to spout negativity, so she's just trying to bring others down. The teacher says, keep your eyes on your own paper and mind your own business. If people paid more attention to their own business instead of minding the affairs of others and telling them how to do their job, we wouldn't have so many problems in this country. But in her case, she is in the public eye. She needs to learn that this will happen to her a lot. So cheers to you and all the professional criticism you get from all of your readers who take qualms with what you write!
